I walked out of the operating room leaving my 16-year old son to receive an 8-hour spinal back fusion that could save his life and that could possibly leave him paralyzed from the waist down. My husband put his arm around my shoulder and guided me to a couch where two dear friends were waiting, and I began to cry. At first the tears were accompanied by fearful thoughts but then suddenly the thoughts and the fear stopped. For a few more minutes, the tears leaked out of the corners of my eyes, as a fire within melted the emptiness and warmed the darkness. It was not merely acceptance; it was a spontaneous leap to profound inner stillness and wholeness. It remained that way for the duration of the operation. I was in awe that this crevasse, this moment that I thought would be one of the most painful in my life, could be filled with such presence, tenderness, peace and love.
This was not merely grace; it is the result of making a quantum leap in awareness over and over until inner peace arises without effort.
